Gilman H. Beck, 85, of Northwood, ND passed away Friday, May 1, 2020 at his home in Northwood. A public visitation will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Bilden-Askew Funeral Home in Northwood. All attendants of the public visitation are required to wear a mask and follow all social distancing guidelines. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Ebenezer Free Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Gilman was born September 15, 1934 to John T. and Minnie (Olson) Beck on a farm in Steele County, between Portland, ND and Hatton, ND. He graduated from Portland High School in 1953. Gilman enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1954 to 1956.
Gil worked at various jobs after being discharged from the Army and in 1957, he started working at the N.D. Mill and Elevator. He went on to manage grain elevators at Grand Forks, ND, Oslo, MN, and Northwood for 40 years. On December 30, 1960, Gilman married Betty Halstensgaard of Gary, Minnesota.
He was a Lions Member at Oslo and Northwood for 40 years. Gilman was a recipient of the Lions Club Melvin Jones Award. He was also a member of many other organizations.
Gil was a member of the Northwood American Legion Post 92 and the Northwood VFW Post 2707.
He was an EMT and a member of the Northwood Ambulance squad and is still a member. Gil was also a Hospice volunteer for Altru Hospital and Hospice of the Red River Valley. He was a part time employee of Bilden-Askew Funeral Home in Northwood and the U.S. government as an enumerator with N.A.S.D.A.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters: Julie (Darius) Schneibel, Fargo, ND; Wendy (Don) Wolfe, Fargo, ND; grandchildren: Danielle (Matt) Roller, Dexter (Sabrina) Schneibel, Jenna (Jacob) Longlet, Jill Schneibel, Kyle Aune, Alyssa (Dikwan McKinzie) Aune, Katelynn Blatchford and Allison Blatchford; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Beck, Portland, ND; sisters-in-law, Roma Beck, Mayville, ND; Joyce Beck, Fargo, ND; and Darlene Beck, Fargo, ND; brother in law, George Brustad, Mayville, ND; Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was his son, Terry Beck; granddaughter, Lindsay Blatchford, nine brothers: Marvin, Tilman, Joseph, Ernest, Carl, David, Einar, Thomas, and John Jr.; three sisters: Clara Johnson, Blanche Amundson, and Nathalie (Becky) Brustad; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
