Vivian Grotte

Vivian Grotte, 85, of Northwood, ND passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Aneta Parkview Health Center in Aneta, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Ebenezer Free Lutheran Church in Northwood. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Vivian Grotte was born in Elgin ND April 22, 1935 as Vivian Joyce Well. Vivian passed away on Thursday February 4th, 2021 at the age of 85. She grew up in rural North Dakota and graduated from Elgin High School. She studied nursing at Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in May 1955. Her nursing career was spent in Northwood in different roles in the hospital and nursing home and clinic.

Vivian married Jerome (Jerry) T. Grotte on November 17, 1956 in Grand Forks, ND and had three children; Paul, Emily and Marie. Her interests and hobbies were varied and included gardening, reading, studying all things Norwegian. She loved collecting dolls and teddy bears and refinishing old furniture. She sewed clothing, knitted and crocheted afghans, scarves, mittens and winter hats. She was very skilled at needlepoint, loved to visit Decorah Iowa with her sister Hazel and traveled to Norway as a high point of her travel goals. She loved to watch birds especially at wintertime, with Dad always being the designated feeder-filler. She documented all the various birds that would visit each season and she could perfectly whistle the high-pitched call of the chickadee.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Grotte, her father Harvey Well Sr., mother Mae Well, sister Hazel Sander as well as other aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her children Paul Grotte (Fargo), Emily Richardson (Merriam KS), Marie Grotte (Kansas City MO), brothers Harvey Well Jr. (Bismarck ND), Vernon Well (Kalispell MT) and Donna Bentz (Paso Robles CA) and many nieces and nephews.

Dear Paul, Emily and Marie..... so sorry for the loss of your Mom. I knew her well as a nurse as well as being relatives! She dedicated many years as a nurse and a teacher of many at NDHC. She will truly be missed. HUGS to you all! I hope to see you in the spring. Laurel

I'm Vivian's cousin, Rob. Vivian and I always seemed to be separated by miles, as I grew up in Wing, near Bismarck. And we were separated by age, as she was 21 years older than me. But we were never separated by the heart. We always had a great time together. Any time we'd get together, we had a lot of fun times. We also joked about our birthdays, as hers was April 22, mine is April 23 and we had another cousin whose birthday was April 21. So it was easy to remember Vivian's birthday! To Paul, Marie and Emily, may God be with you at this time and always. Love you and miss you, cuz!

Please share my condolences. I spent some times with your Mother during our retirement years. She would sometimes ride the Sr. Bus to Fargo, then call me and I would meet her at West Acres for lunch... always a nice visit. I was a nurse also and worked awhile at the Northwood hospital. I will be interested to attend a service in the spring. A memorial amount will be sent to Kringen Sons of Norway in Fargo in her memory.

Paul, Emily and Marie,
As I sit here tonight I have so many fun memories of your Mom. I was blessed with the opportunity to travel with Vivian and Mom(Hazel). Fun trips to Red Wing Mn doing genealogy research. Rummage sales in Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks. And on 3 day Lefse making in a blizzard... Using 80 pounds of potatoes. Lots of laughs, songs sung while doing dishes, and dancing in the kitchen. I will treasure these memories always. Love you
