Vivian Grotte

Vivian Grotte, 85, of Northwood, ND passed away Thursday, February 4, 2021 at Aneta Parkview Health Center in Aneta, ND. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Ebenezer Free Lutheran Church in Northwood. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Vivian Grotte was born in Elgin ND April 22, 1935 as Vivian Joyce Well. Vivian passed away on Thursday February 4th, 2021 at the age of 85. She grew up in rural North Dakota and graduated from Elgin High School. She studied nursing at Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in May 1955. Her nursing career was spent in Northwood in different roles in the hospital and nursing home and clinic.

Vivian married Jerome (Jerry) T. Grotte on November 17, 1956 in Grand Forks, ND and had three children; Paul, Emily and Marie. Her interests and hobbies were varied and included gardening, reading, studying all things Norwegian. She loved collecting dolls and teddy bears and refinishing old furniture. She sewed clothing, knitted and crocheted afghans, scarves, mittens and winter hats. She was very skilled at needlepoint, loved to visit Decorah Iowa with her sister Hazel and traveled to Norway as a high point of her travel goals. She loved to watch birds especially at wintertime, with Dad always being the designated feeder-filler. She documented all the various birds that would visit each season and she could perfectly whistle the high-pitched call of the chickadee.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Grotte, her father Harvey Well Sr., mother Mae Well, sister Hazel Sander as well as other aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her children Paul Grotte (Fargo), Emily Richardson (Merriam KS), Marie Grotte (Kansas City MO), brothers Harvey Well Jr. (Bismarck ND), Vernon Well (Kalispell MT) and Donna Bentz (Paso Robles CA) and many nieces and nephews.
