Thelma Gylten

Thelma Gylten, 78, of Halstad, Minnesota died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Halstad Living Center.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, May 29, 2010 at the Halstad Lutheran Church in Halstad, Minnesota with burial in West Union Cemetery rural Northwood, North Dakota.

Visitation will be at the Bilden Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.

Thelma Hove was born March 10, 1932 in Northwood, North Dakota the daughter of Thomas and Cora (Peterson) Hove. She was raised on a farm near Northwood attending Loretta Township School and graduated from Northwood High School in 1950. She then attended Mayville Teachers College graduating in 1952. Upon graduation she taught in Barnesville, Minnesota for two years. On August 29, 1954 she was united in marriage to Vernon Gylten in Northwood. They made there home in Mayville where she taught school and he attended college. Once he finished his education they moved to Badger, Minnesota where they both taught school. In 1959 they moved to rural Northwood where they farmed until 1967 and she served as church organist at West Union Lutheran Church. They then moved to Halstad, Minnesota where she taught in the Halstad/Norman County West School District until retiring in 1997. While teaching in Halstad she attended Moorhead State University where she received her Bachelors Degree in Education and graduated with honors. Vernon passed away on December 26, 2006.
She was a member of Halstad Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, the American Legion Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Town and Country Study Club.
Thelma enjoyed genealogy and had traced family lineage for many generations. She also had numerous collections and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.

She is survived by her daughters, Kari St. Michel of Rugby, North Dakota and Kim (Rickey) Odejewski of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Evan St. Michel, Erin (Brady) Michel and Ethan St. Michel; son-in-law, Rob St. Michel, of Rugby, North Dakota; brothers-in-law, Wallace (Arlayne) Gylten and Delvin (Doris) Gylten both of Northwood, North Dakota and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Vernon.

The Bilden Funeral Home on Northwood, North Dakota is assisting the family with arrangements.
