Marie Kathleen Ione (Haga) Uglem was born the third child of Henry and Stella (Johnson) Haga, a granddaughter of Paul C. Johnson, who named the city of Northwood in 1884 and was it's first postmaster. She attended and graduated from the Northwood Public School system, after which she attended Interstate Business College. As adventuresome young women, she and 2 other girls from Northwood found work in Los Angelos, CA, from 1943-1946 during WWII.
Marie married Berthold Ivan Uglem on June 17, 1951. She was an acitve particpant in their farming operation in Loretta township before their retirement in 1986. They moved into an apartment in Northwood in 1990 and spent 15 summers at
Big Floyd Lake, Detroit Lakes, MN. Bert passed away October 13, 2002. Marie moved into NDHC in February, 2008.
Marie was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, being a member of Northwood Evangelical and West Union Lutheran churches. She was a 4-H leader, belonged to Loretta Homemakers and served with women's church groups. She loved to sew and bake.
Bert and Marie loved to travel and went to Norway, Hawaii and Nova Scotia. In 1994, they were in Australia to visit her great niece and family.
Having no children of their own, Marie and Bert were very generous with their nieces and nephews, encouraging them in their endeavors, taking joy in their accomplishments and supporting them if there was defeat. The WELCOME sign at their home meant warmth and love, goodies and fun.
Marie is survived by her niece Marcia (Virgil) Sheggerud of Northwood and their family: Darren (Amy) and children Ivy Marie and Talia Elise of Shakopee, MN; Amy (Robert) Woods and children Camilla, Evan and Fraser of Melbourne, Australia; and Nathan (Sarah) and children Kolby James and Isabella Grace of Fargo, ND; great niece Janyne Vangsness, Fargo, ND and her dad Norman of Lisbon, ND. Also surviving are Bert's aunt Mille Skurdell of Northwood, sisters-in-law Glenna Uglem, Northwood and Florence Klabo, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews with their children and grandchildren on her husband's side of the family.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Paul and sister Elizabeth; niece Marjorie Vangsness, and nephews David Uglem, Gary Uglem and Paul Uglem.
The Bilden Funeral Home of Northwood is assisting the family with arrangements.
My husband and I met Marie and Burt though our friends, Vern and Thelma Gylten. Now they are all once again reunited in Heaven! Marie used to come here for our Mother-Daughter-Friend banquets at the church and other functions at the Gylten home. What a wonderful, sweet, loving lady! So sorry to hear of her passing, but thankful that she is free and living with the Lord, Burt and all her loved ones that have gone before. May the memories of good times shared bring back smiles and laughter. These memories remain in one's heart forever! With Our Love & Sympathy, Ron & Carolyn Gotteberg

In 2009 I was a patient at NDHC in the hospital swingbed section. I recovered from a fall there two times for a period of five months. It was then that I came to know Marie Uglem. I would see her at Sunday services. She seemed interested in me, and she would stop by my wheelchair. I was taken with her wonderful smile, and I would comment on her elegant clothes and painted fingernails. She would react with delight--she still liked men--and she would do a dance for me! Her charm was beguiling! Even at her age, Marie seemed to celebrate life, and I just imagined her outreach as a younger woman. I am glad for her just now since she is with the Lord. Meanwhle, I will always have fond memories of the incomparable Marie! My sympathies to her family!
