Margaret Groth

Margaret C. Groth, 88, of rural Portland, ND passed away Friday, November 25, 2011, at Northwood Deaconess Health Center, Northwood, ND. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 29, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Little Forks Lutheran Church, rural Hatton, ND. Visitation will be held Monday, November 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. prayer service at the Bilden Funeral Home, Northwood, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of services. Burial in the Little Forks Lutheran Cemetery.
Margaret Corrine Bjerke was born August 4, 1923, in Steele County, North Dakota, the daughter of Alfred and Clara (Boe) Bjerke. She was raised on a farm and attended country school and Hatton High School.
On March 5, 1940, she was united in marriage to Iver Groth in Hatton. They lived in California during World War II. After the war they returned to North Dakota to farm in Steele County. After retiring from farming in 1980, they spent their winters in Arizona and summers on the farm. Margaret lived in Northwood the past year.
Margaret was a member of Hovfa Lutheran Church of rural Finley, ND until it closed and has since attended Little Forks Lutheran Church of rural Hatton. Over the years she was involved in the church in many aspects, including the choir, ladies aid, and teaching Sunday school. Some of Margaret's favorite pastimes were needlework and gardening. She was well known in the area for the flowers she planted and tended around the farm yard.
She is survived by two children: Larry (Loretta) Groth and Karen (Loren) Nelson, all of Northwood, six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Iver on April 11, 2009; son, Ernest; and brother, Palmer Alfred Bjerke.
