Lorraine Ness

Lorraine Ness, 88, of Hatton, ND passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 27, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Hatton. A visitation will be held Sunday, January 26, 2020 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Hatton Prairie Village Nursing Home in Hatton. Memorials are preferred to Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, the church that Lorraine called home since the day she was born.

The daughter of Marius and Ragna Ostmo, Lorraine was born on the Ostmo Farm May 7, 1931.  She was raised on that farm west of Northwood with her two brothers, where she developed a strong work ethic.  She graduated from Hatton High School and then attended Valley City Teacher’s College to get her teaching certificate.  Lorraine taught for one year at Beaver Creek Number 2 as Ms. Ostmo and for one year as Mrs. Orville Ness.

Orville and Lorraine married on the Ostmo Farm in April 1951.  Within a year, they purchased and moved onto the farm just west of the Ostmo Farm, where they resided the majority of their lives.  Lorraine worked on the farm alongside Orville doing a variety of tasks such as picking potatoes, milking cows, and driving farm equipment and vehicles.  Lorraine was a mother and homemaker.  She cooked, canned, and baked.  She sewed, quilted, and crocheted.  Lorraine was active in the life of Beaver Creek Church.  She held numerous ladies aid offices and directed the very first Christmas Sunday school pageant for Beaver Creek.  Lorraine was a 4-H leader for many years.

Orville and Lorraine were happily married for 68 years, demonstrating an extraordinary example of love and commitment.  They enjoyed every minute they had together.  Rarely were they seen not holding hands.  Lorraine was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She loved to travel, never taking the same road twice, and explore.  She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and camping.  She cherished a good parade and community gatherings.

Orville and Lorraine had two children: Vickie (Mick) Thon and Lyle (Karen) Ness. They were blessed with seven grandchildren: Todd (Adonica), Kelly (Christina), Annie (Rob), Peter, Jenny, Elizabeth, and Rachel. And, had the opportunity to spend time with their eight great-grandchildren: Medora, Nicholas, Riley, Oscar, Katrina, Katelyn, Thomas, and Kurtis.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, baby daughter, and brother, Parnell (Maribel) Ostmo.  She leaves behind her brother Morris (ReNae) Ostmo and extended family Jim (Shirley) Ness, Dale (Barb) Ness, and Lucille Ness.
