Loretta Benson

May 16, 1928 — January 18, 2020

Loretta Benson, 91, of Hatton, ND, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Woodside Village in Grand Forks ND. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 24, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton, ND. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Loretta Schurman was born May 16, 1928 to Ted and Christine Schurman in Melrose, MN. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1946.

She married Howard Benson at St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church in Devils Lake on January 25, 1947.  The couple moved to Hoople, ND where Howard was the Great Northern Railway depot agent.

 Howard & Loretta were blessed with four children Judy, Jayne, Jerry and Joan.

The summer of 1967, the couple moved their family to Hatton, ND where they resided for many years.  They operated the drive in and motel in Hatton for a period of time. Loretta was also employed as a kitchen aid at the Hatton Prairie Village Nursing Home.

The couple spent a few years in Williston, ND, eventually returning to eastern ND where they remained.  Howard died on November 25, 1998.  

Family was extremely important to Loretta and she spent many hours planning family gatherings where she always had everyone’s favorites prepared. She enjoyed coffee parties and wine time with her girl friends.

Loretta was a member of St John Lutheran Church in Hatton, ND.

She leaves her loving family to mourn her passing:  Children - Judy Trengen; Jayne (Donn) Lee; Jerry (Connie) Benson; Joan (Scott Alexander)

9 Grandchildren; 16 Great Grandchildren; sister, Jeannette Kleinschmidt and several nieces and nephews.

Loretta was preceeded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

The Benson Family would like to thank the caregivers at Woodside Village for the loving care shown to Loretta.
