Larry Kappedal

Larry Kappedal, 70, of Northwood, ND passed away at home in Northwood under hospice care after a prolonged illness on August 1, 2017. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Washington Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Larry was born in Northwood, ND on April 9, 1947 to Halvor and Carol (Haugen) Kappedal. As a child and young man, he was known for his big heart and for getting away with just about anything.

On August 22, 1975, he married Beverly Kielland. In 1980, Larry and Bev moved to the family farm outside of Northwood where they raised their daughters, Karli and Kami. Larry continued to farm until his retirement in 2011. His illness limited his retirement, and he stayed close to home in his last years and moved into the town of Northwood when his daughter Kami took over the family farm in 2016. Bev cared for him until the last.

Larry lived a big life. He loved to travel, visiting 48 states, Canada and Mexico. His hobbies included flying and computers. He served on many local boards. He was a Farmer. He loved his land. He was proud of his crops. He loved to harvest corn. He was the kind of Daddy and Grandpa who would give rides on any of the farm equipment his kids wanted. He was an amazing son, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Larry is survived by his wife, Beverly; his daughters: Karli Kappedal-Hoekstra and Kami Kappedal; son-in-law, Mike Hoekstra; grandchildren: Gabriel and Kasia Hoekstra and Max and Jayci Kappedal; brother, Richard, his wife Bette, and their children Laurie Kappedal and Ryan Kappedal; and Aunts, Lilah Child and Sylvia Kappedal.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law, Jason Anderson; and his nephew, Robert Kappedal.

Bev,Karli & Kami, So sorry for your loss. Bev & Larry were some of the 1st people I met in Northwood. I remember the girls were so little & their Dad so proud of them.

I am the grandson of Albert & Clara Onsager, next farm over. I used to visit my grandparents and play and ride horses and occasionally work with Larry and Dick. I thought about the brothers just about every time I thought about the farm. I wish I had been able to get back to Northwood more often - sounds like I would have enjoyed Larry as an adult just like I did as a kid.

My deepest sympathy to Larry's family. We were classmates, but I no longer live near so had no idea he was ill. Prayers for comfort and strength for days ahead. DiAnna Thingelstad

My friend, Georgia, texted me this morning after she saw Larry's name in the GF Herald. We met Larry at 4-H camp when we were in 5th grade. We all went to camp the following year and got to spend a Sunday afternoon at the Kappedal farm. It's been 50 years since we've seen him but would often think of him and hoped he was doing well. Sending my deepest sympathy to his family. Sincerely, Shawna K. Schuler

Larry, you were always one of my favorite cousins, the handsomest, and one of my little girl crushes. You were a constant companion to another cousin gone too soon, Ritchie Evanson. You always had a gleam in your eye, usually connected with some mischief you and Ritchie were cooking up. You always made me laugh, and sometimes annoyed the heck out of me, as any good older cousin should. You taught me well in the art of being a smart aleck and will always bring a smile to my face! Rest well and I hope to meet up with you later in a better place!
