June Sanda

June Sanda, 69, of Northwood, ND, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Hatton Prairie Village in Hatton, ND, surrounded by her family and friends. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Hatton, ND. A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Bilden-Askew Funeral Home in Northwood.

June Elizabeth Smestad was born on April 8, 1956, in Mayville, ND, to Stanley and Jean Smestad. She grew up in Hatton and was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. While in her teens, she worked at Christy’s Café in Hatton and as a lifeguard at the Hatton Swimming Pool. June graduated from Hatton High School in 1974.

On August 23, 1975, June married Lyle Sanda. They resided on a farm in rural Northwood. Together, they had three girls: Amy, Heather, and Jessica. She worked 42 years at Northwood Deaconess Health Center in the activities department.

June was a wonderful mother and loved being a grandma. She had a sense of humor everyone loved. She loved her plants and planting flowers, dressing up in costumes, and spending time with her family and friends.

June is survived by her husband, Lyle; children: Amy Kirchen (Bert), Heather Joslin, and Jessica Sanda; father, Stanley Smestad; brothers, Terry Smestad and Kim Smestad; grandchildren: Kyle Kirchen, Alan Joslin, McKenzie Kirchen, Jackson Joslin, Jaylyn Kirchen, and Cody Kirchen.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Jean Smestad; brothers, baby Terry and Anthony Smestad; and niece, Melissa Halvorson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hatton Prairie Village and Hospice for the great care they gave June. They would also like to thank June's cousin, Janet Green, and her friends, Pam Pollert, Sherry Lyste, and Mary Broeren, for the shopping and movie trips, rides, and their friendship over the years.
