Jean Ann Ulland, 86, of Hatton, ND passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2023, at her daughter’s home, rural Mayville, ND, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and her daughter Kristie. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Hatton. A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 24, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church.
Jean Ann was born February 15, 1936, at home in rural Hatton, to Henry and Jeanette (Beck) Amundson. She grew up in Hatton and graduated from Hatton High School in 1954, the “Best Flyer Class Ever” according to her. After high school, Jean Ann attended one year at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She married Ervin Ulland of Portland, ND on June 30, 1957. She worked as the register of deeds at the Steele County Courthouse, Finley, ND, until 1974 when they moved to Fordville, ND. Jean Ann then worked as a para at the Fordville School and her long lasting side gig of Avon sales began and continued into Hatton and neighboring communities. She recruited a number of “employees” to help with her deliveries.
She was secretary at the Hatton Public School until her retirement in 2006. Many lasting friendships were made with staff and students. Her smile and love for people was evident. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the VFW Auxiliary. Jean Ann enjoyed sewing barbie doll clothes for her two daughters and her god daughter, Kari Grandalen Bakkum, Halloween costumes for her grands and greats, playing cards especially pinochle and samba, various games, crocheting, diamond art, and watching her grandchildren play Ice Dawg Hockey. She was known as Grandma Jean to Cody and Kayla’s hockey teams and friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Kay Marie Ulland and Kristie Jean Braaten, both of Mayville, ND; grandchildren, Cody Allen Ervin (Cassie) Braaten and Kayla Jean (Curt) Hanson; great-grandchildren: Kase Brian, Crew Allen Eric, Canaan Kim, Chloe Jean, Coleton Kim, and Jadyn Ann. Jean Ann is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Ervin; brothers, Roger Beck and Eugene Beck; and son-in-law, Kim Braaten.
The family would like to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for the care they gave Jean Ann. They would also like to thank special friends, Pastor Bruce Vold, Curt Schaff, and Mary Lou Guerra for their visits and friendship.
