Janice Gabriel

Janice Gabriel, 81, of Northwood, ND passed away Friday, June 20, 2025, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND, with her family by her side. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Ebenezer Free Lutheran Church in Northwood. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Janice Faye Opdahl was born on August 15, 1943, in Northwood Deaconess Hospital to Orphie and Madelyn (Hanson) Opdahl. She was baptized and confirmed in NELC. She grew up in rural Northwood and attended a 1 room country school and the only student in her class from 1st – 8th grade. Janice then graduated from Hatton High School in 1961 and attended Interstate Business College. On March 30, 1963, she married Dennis Gabriel. She lived in Bismarck, Hatton, and Northwood.

Janice worked at the Grand Forks Clinic, Hatton Nursing Home on opening day, and the Grand Forks Rose Floral Shop. She loved planting flowers, thrifting with her sister Linda, antiquing with her daughter, collecting dolls, traveling to Montana on a train to see her grandchildren, and family vacations to Lake Tahoe and San Diego to visit Darin in Alpine, CA. She so appreciated her family taking care of her at her beautiful home. Our mother was so caring, giving, loving to everyone and enjoyed the simple things in life.

Survivors include her son, Darin Gabriel, Northwood, ND; daughter, Shawn Lovett, Gilbert, AZ; sister, Linda (Keith) Berg, Hatton, ND; brother, Robert (Debbie) Opdahl, Northwood, ND; grandchildren, Dakota Lovett, Los Angeles, CA and Madison Lovett, Brooklyn, NY. Janice is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Myrna Loy Califano, San Diego, CA; and several uncles, aunts, and cousins.
