Duane Ruud

Jul 28, 1933 — May 16, 2026

Duane Arvid Ruud, age 92, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, in McVille, North Dakota, where he had spent the better part of his long and quietly remarkable life. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at New Luther Valley Lutheran Church in McVille. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Born on July 28, 1933, in Nelson County, North Dakota, Duane was the son of Paul and Gladys Ruud. He grew up in Center Township, attending a small rural school before continuing his education at McVille High School. Duane answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany, where he discovered a deep appreciation for Europe and its people — an experience that stayed with him long after he returned home. Ever the adventurous spirit within his modest means, he even purchased a Volkswagen Beetle while abroad, a small treasure from a chapter of life he truly cherished.

Upon returning to North Dakota, Duane came home to the land he loved. He farmed alongside his parents and, in time, took over the family farming operation — a responsibility he carried with quiet pride and steady dedication. The rhythms of the land defined him, and he tended his fields with the same unhurried faithfulness that marked everything he did.

Duane was a lifelong and faithful member of New Luther Valley Church. His faith was not loud or complicated — it was quiet, consistent, and genuine, expressed less in words than in the way he moved through the world. He lived simply, wanted little, and gave freely. His generosity flowed naturally from a deep and steady belief that what he had was not entirely his own to keep. That faith shaped his character, grounded his daily life, and was visible to anyone who knew him well.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Gladys Ruud, and his sister, Arlis Ruud.

He is survived by his brother-in-law, James Lee; his nephew Russell Lee and family — Rachel, Elizabeth, Helena, and Faith; and his nephew Jeremy Lee and family — Sylvia and August.

Duane Arvid Ruud lived 92 years with grace, generosity, and a faith that never called attention to itself but never wavered either. His legacy is not measured in grand gestures, but in the steady kindness of a life rooted in something larger than himself. He will be deeply missed.
