Carol Kappedal

December 25, 1919 — September 16, 2008

Carol Kappedal died quietly after a brief struggle with cancer on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Valley Community Health Center in Northwood, ND, with her son Larry by her side.

Carol Fern Haugen was born Christmas Day 1919 to Anna and Sever Haugen at rural Larimore, ND. She was raised at Larimore and Honeyford and graduated from Larimore High School. She attended Mayville State College and obtained her Standard Teacher's Certificate in 1940 and began her teaching career in a country school in rural Honeyford, ND.
On June 20, 1943 she married Halvor Kappedal at Honeyford. After the wedding they moved to San Francisco, CA, where Halvor was stationed with the Coast Guard during WW II, and Carol worked as a typist for the FBI at Presidio. After the war they lived in rural Avon Township, Northwood and farmed and raised two sons. Carol continued to teach in the Northwood School District until her retirement in 1975. Upon her retirement she and Halvor enjoyed several winters in Arizona together. In 1978 Halvor and Carol moved into the town of Northwood where they remained residents the rest of their lives.
Carol's first priority was always her family and she loved her sons, Richard and Larry dearly, was a loving and involved Grandmother and enjoyed her two Great-Grandchildren. Carol was an active member of Washington Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, Lois Circle and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, needlework, watching birds at her birdfeeders, and always enjoyed visiting with her family and friends. She also was actively involved with the American Cancer Society and the Northwood Hospital and Home Auxiliary.


Carol is survived by her sons, Richard and his wife Bette of Sioux Falls, SD and Larry and his wife Bev of Northwood, ND. She treasured her four grandchildren. Laurel Kappedal of Portland, OR, Ryan (Elisa) Kappedal of Herndon, VA, Karli (Mike) Kappedal-Hoekstra of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Kami (Jason Anderson) Kappedal of Bismarck, North Dakota and two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Kasia Hoekstra of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Carol is also survived by her sister, Lilah Child of Duluth, MN and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Halvor, her grandson, Robert James Kappedal, her parents, brother, Francis and twin infant brothers.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Friday, September 19, 2008 at Washington Lutheran Church rural Northwood with burial in Washington Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Bilden Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm, Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.

The Bilden Funeral Home of Northwood is assisting the family with arrangements.
