Myrtle Eken

Myrtle Constance Eken, 93, of Northwood, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood.

Myrtle was born April 7, l9l5 in Enderlin, ND the daughter of the late Anton and Ida (Petersen) Sorlien. She was confirmed at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks on April 7, l929. She attended school in Grand Forks and was a graduate of Hatton High School. Myrtle married Benard Eken of Hatton in Grand Forks on February 20, l935. They resided in Hatton for many years before moving to Northwood. He died on December 31, l989. Myrtle worked many jobs throughout the years, some of which included Johnson's Grocery Store, Pioneer Telephone Company and the Northwood Nursing Home. They owned and operated the Northwood Lanes Café for a number of years. In her younger years she was quite active in the St. John Ladies Aid of Hatton. She was a member of the Northwood ELC Church, its WELCA and the American Legion Auxiliary. She became a resident at the Deaconess Health Center on April 15, 2003.

Survivors include one daughter Shirley and her husband Thorman Stenmo of Hatton, one son Gerald and his wife Shirley of Mankato, MN, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, husband Benard, daughter Patricia Eken Wenaas and one grandson Thomas Stenmo.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 am, Monday, December 1, 2008 at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northwood with burial in St. John Cemetery, Hatton, North Dakota.

Visitation will be on Sunday, November 30, 2008 from 5 - 7 at the Bilden Funeral Home, Northwood with a 7:00 prayer service and one hour prior to services in the church.
